Depending on fuel quality 100,000 to 200,000 kilometres.
Sign of over fuelling, many things can cause this air or fuel related.
Designed to improve the overall efficiency and increase performance from your engine, a turbocharger is an exhaust gas driver supercharger. It is fitted to a vehicle’s engine, the turbocharger uses an air pump to force air into the cylinder. The compressor is then used to supply air under pressure to the engine, which combined with the right amount of fuel has the effect of increasing the output of the engine. This increase can vary from 10% to as much as 500%.
The hot and expanding gasses coming out of the engine are what power a turbocharger so there is no drain of the engine’s net power. Turbocharged engines are also not affected in the same way as naturally aspirated engines are when they go at higher altitudes.
Diesel engines are perfect for adding a turbo to it as they can handle stress and pressures such as temperatures. Most diesel engines manufactured from 1984 onwards were designed with turbocharging in mind. The higher pressure of diesel engines requires them to be stronger than petrol vehicles. Diesel engines operate at a much lower and narrower RPM band than their petrol counterparts. This lower RPM makes it more problematic for a diesel engine to draw in adequate air into the combustion chambers.
If you look after your vehicle, your vehicle, your vehicle should in hindsight look after you. You can expect your turbo diesel to last between 250,000 – 3000,000kms. Several variables are dependent on this however such as how regularly you service your vehicle, the quality of fuel, the way the car/4wd has been driven, the make and model of the vehicle, the parts use, the types of engine oils and lubricants used, the time the vehicle idles before driving.
Diesel turbo failures can be due to other mechanical faults and not necessarily a defect with the turbo. Faults include damage from foreign objects, not enough oil, or contamination of oil and in fact, it is believed approximately 80-90 percent of turbo failures are oil-related. It is important to find the root of the cause to prevent this issue from occurring again and causing even more damage.
If a turbo is failing, it will make a distinctive loud noise when trying to accelerate. As soon as you hear the slightest noise, it could save you hundreds of dollars in the long run.

Tuning a diesel depends on the type of the car or 4wd, the type of set-up that is already in place such as race car, streetcar, supercharged, performance chips, etc. The cost of tuning a diesel can be between $200 – $1800.
Costs for a dyno tune can vary between $210 – $450 inclusive of GST. The dyno tune for your vehicle depends on the make and model of your car and if your vehicle required additional parts. The dyno tune service measures the engine output which includes horsepower performances and torque and tests the engine for engine conditions and loads. Based on what the information tells you, the dyno tune can save you hundreds in the long run.
To get the most out of your diesel vehicle, it is best to speak with a special diesel mechanic who can provide you with the best advice and optimisation options.
A dynamometer or commonly named dyno is a specialized device professionals used to simulate how the engine performance when driven on the road. A dyno tune is expensive as you are paying for their knowledge and expertise. Diesel Power Systems are one of the most established diesel fuel injection, diagnostic, dyno, and turbo specialists on the Sunshine Coast, Maroochydore since 1986. Only using quality, premium parts, Diesel Power Systems is the holding agency for Bosch, Denso, and Zexel. You can feel confidant your diesel-powered machine is carefully and professionally diagnosed and repaired by factory-trained technicians.
Dyno’s can test for features of vehicles such as wind drag simulations, testing of vibration, stop and start in acceleration, load simulations, diagnostics of ABS brakes in 4wds, and wheel bearing issues.
In most cases, a dyno tune is about making sure there is the correct air to fuel ratio to support the RPM and load on the engine. To get the most out of your dyno tune, ensure your vehicle is free of flaws and mechanical issues as this can affect your result. Check your plugs are properly gapped, fuel, air, and oil filters are in good condition, belts and hoses are replaced or near new. Ensure all fluids are checked including a new engine and transmission oil, leaky gaskets and plugs are fixed, at least half a tank of fuel. Tyres should be legal and at the correct tyre pressure. Before the dyno tune takes place, remember to discuss with Diesel Power Systems your expectation from the beginning. If you are looking a horsepower and beyond the vehicle’s factory settings or your engine has seen better days and worn down, issues may arise.
If tuned by a professional tuning specialist, you can add quite a bit of horsepower to your turbo by having it tuned. A tune to your engine will also improve fuel efficiency and run smoother.
While intercoolers are not necessary for turbos, they are an intake air cooling device that is most commonly used on turbocharged engines on vehicles. It does not increase overall horsepower, it will improve overall performance.
There are several quick wins to increasing horsepower without breaking the bank. Here are some quick ways Diesel Power Systems can assist with increasing your horsepower.
- Upgrade your cold-air intake. This can easily provide a considerable amount of horsepower to your vehicle. With an increase in the air within the cylinders to mix with fuel, more combustion and equally and increase in horsepower.
- A performance chip such as a Steinbauer power module will not only increase fuel efficiency, it will overall increase torque, and horsepower to your vehicle. A Steinbauer power model is a popular option among diesel 4wd owners.
- Consider upgrading your vehicle’s exhaust system. This is highly recommended if you have already modified your vehicle.
- Synthetic engine oils and lubricants throughout your car improve the overall performance of your vehicle and provide a protection and resistance barrier to heat.
There are many other ways to increase horsepower to vehicles, it depends on the makes and models of your vehicle. To find out more, contact Brendan and the team for a personalized, obligation free quote.
