Frequently asked questions

Over time your fuel injectors can wear out. While fuel injectors can last up to 90,000 – 100,000 km’s, there are several variables at play, such as the make and the car model, how well you look after your vehicle and how you drive the car. Signs of wear and tear of a fuel injector include excessive fuel and more than usual black smoke. You may even notice an unusual sound as well.  Depending on fuel quality 100,000 to 200,000 kilometres.

Sign of over fuelling, many things can cause this air or fuel related.

Designed to improve the overall efficiency and increase performance from your engine, a turbocharger is an exhaust gas driver supercharger. It is fitted to a vehicle’s engine, the turbocharger uses an air pump to force air into the cylinder. The compressor is then used to supply air under pressure to the engine, which combined with the right amount of fuel has the effect of increasing the output of the engine. This increase can vary from 10% to as much as 500%.

The hot and expanding gasses coming out of the engine are what power a turbocharger so there is no drain of the engine’s net power. Turbocharged engines are also not affected in the same way as naturally aspirated engines are when they go at higher altitudes.

Diesel engines are perfect for adding a turbo to it as they can handle stress and pressures such as temperatures. Most diesel engines manufactured from 1984 onwards were designed with turbocharging in mind. The higher pressure of diesel engines requires them to be stronger than petrol vehicles. Diesel engines operate at a much lower and narrower RPM band than their petrol counterparts. This lower RPM makes it more problematic for a diesel engine to draw in adequate air into the combustion chambers.

You can expect your turbo diesel to last anywhere between 250,000 – 300,000kms. The life expectancy of a diesel dependent on how regularly you service your vehicle, the make and model of your car, fuel quality, the way the SUV or 4wd is driven and the parts and the oils used.

Diesel turbo failures can be due to other mechanical faults and not necessarily a defect with the turbo. Faults include damage from foreign objects, not enough oil, or contamination of oil and in fact, it is believed approximately 80-90 percent of turbo failures are oil-related. It is important to find the root of the cause to prevent this issue from occurring again and causing even more damage.

If a turbo is failing, it will make a distinctive loud noise when trying to accelerate. As soon as you hear the slightest noise, it could save you hundreds of dollars in the long run.

When you start up your diesel car, you will almost always notice a small amount of black smoke coming from the exhaust. This can also happen upon acceleration and is quite normal. If you see a consistent amount of black smoke pouring from your exhaust, it is time to take it to a diesel performance specialist. There could be several things wrong in this case, such as fuel injectors. If black smoke is excessive, contact Diesel Power Systems as soon as possible to identify the problem before other issues arise.

The more your turbo diesel is damaged, the more damage your engine will damage if your turbo diesel is damaged. The longer your drive your vehicle with a damaged turbo, the more costly it will be to repair, costing you thousands of dollars.

Diesel injectors operate at very high pressures of combustion. They deliver fuel to the cylinder of diesel engines, and because of this, skimping on quality for fuel injectors are not advisable. Less optimal fuel injectors can be noisy and fuel-efficient; installing quality products such as Bosch, Zexel, and Garret can withstand the high pressure it requires. Genuine and brand-new diesel fuel injectors may seem expensive; however, this will assist your hip pocket and value for money in the long run.

DENSO Australia has introduced a remanufacturing program to offer economical injector repairs. DENSO spares no expense and cuts no corners when it comes to remanufacturing its products. This ensures that the remanufactured product meets the required specification set by the vehicle manufacturer. Failing to meet this specification can potentially jeopardise the performance and longevity of an engine. DENSO ensures that only genuine parts are utilised, whilst reusable components undergo vigorous testing to ensure they meet DENSO’s high-quality standards.

  1. Revving inconsistently – If your revs are going crazy and revving inconsistently, this is a tell-tale sign of dirty or worn fuel injectors.
  2. Stalling your engine – your SUV or 4wd begins to idle unevenly, or the engine to start at all. This may be due to the car not receiving enough fuel supply.
  3. Reduction in fuel economy – sudden increase in fuel costs? This may result from worn diesel injectors as more demand on the injector will require more fuel.
  4. Smelly fuel odour – this would be the cause of a leaking fuel line, a crack in an injector seal, or even the valve not closing correctly, resulting in a damaged fuel injector.
  5. Misfiring injector – this could result from a clogged injector that continually struggles to disperse fuel to the engine.

What is that ping, click, rattle, mesh sound, tickling noise, whine, knock? Whatever your sound, it’s time to pay attention! Noises can vary from air and fuel mixture in cylinders that are ignited prematurely or low oil levels, rod knocks or noisy lifters; there are too many to name. While some knocking sounds are normal, others noises should be looked into as soon as possible. Contact a diesel specialist to take care of these noises.

While technically you can replace just one fuel injector, but in reality, it is firmly advised that you should replace all of the fuel injectors as they all need replacing not long after.

Nothing is ever of the cards, but it is doubtful that all four fuel injectors will fail at once.

To get the most out of your diesel vehicle, it is best to speak with a special diesel mechanic who can provide you with the best advice and optimisation options.

If tuned by a professional tuning specialist, you can add quite a bit of horsepower to your turbo by having it tuned. A tune to your engine will also improve fuel efficiency and run smoother.

While intercoolers are not necessary for turbos, they are an intake air cooling device that is most commonly used on turbocharged engines on vehicles. It does not increase overall horsepower, it will improve overall performance.

There are several quick wins to increasing horsepower without breaking the bank. Here are some quick ways Diesel Power Systems can assist with increasing your horsepower.

  • Upgrade your cold-air intake. This can easily provide a considerable amount of horsepower to your vehicle. With an increase in the air within the cylinders to mix with fuel, more combustion and equally and increase in horsepower.
  • A performance chip such as a Steinbauer power module will not only increase fuel efficiency, it will overall increase torque, and horsepower to your vehicle. A Steinbauer power model is a popular option among diesel 4wd owners.
  • Consider upgrading your vehicle’s exhaust system. This is highly recommended if you have already modified your vehicle.
  • Synthetic engine oils and lubricants throughout your car improve the overall performance of your vehicle and provide a protection and resistance barrier to heat.

There are many other ways to increase horsepower to vehicles, it depends on the makes and models of your vehicle. To find out more, contact Brendan and the team for a personalized, obligation free quote.

Yes, you’ll still be able to drive your vehicle if your turbo diesel fails; however, engine failure won’t be far behind, so only move on if you have to and head straight into Diesel Power Systems.

Just like waking out of bed first thing in the morning, it pays for your diesel car to warm up as well. Please allow between five and ten minutes for your engine to warm up before driving.

  • Loss of power when accelerating – when you lose acceleration or notice quite a power delay, it might be time to have it checked by a diesel mechanic as it may be your turbo failing.
  • Exhaust smoke – If you notice a little more smoke than usual, this could be a warning sign your turbo has an issue. Oil may be leaking into the exhaust system, and as a result, you will see a significant increase in exhaust smoke.
  • Engine Light – A classic tell-tale sign something is a little off is your ‘check engine light’ comes on. Please don’t turn it off or ignore it; your engine light is illuminating on your dashboard for a reason. While it could be minor issues, they could be more serious such as a faulty turbo.
  • Whining engine – A whining sound in your engine could be several things, such as a hose that has a hole in it, giving it a whistling noise, or it could be more serious.
  • Other signs could be general wear and tear, damaged seals, leaking oil into the manifold or foreign objects within your turbo.

A minor car service includes changing your vehicle’s engine oil and oil filters, air filters, top-up of fluids, and an inspection of belts, leads, hoses, brakes, pads and brake fluid, brake pads, discs and callipers, radiator coolant, power steering fluid, steering and suspension checks, light bulbs, windscreens, washers, plugs battery, transmissions, tyre pressures and exhaust.

Servicing your car is not a legal requirement. Diesel Power Systems recommends conducting a service to your vehicle based on the manufacturer’s warranty and completing your mechanical service at least six to twelve months or every 10,000 – 20,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. We offer general servicing to diesel small SUVs, light commercial vehicles, motorhomes, 4wds, and petrol cars.

Missing a mechanical car service for your diesel or petrol vehicle is not ideal. It can lead to further headaches in the long run. A mechanical service will ensure that all fluids and lubricants are topped up, electronic components and mechanical elements are functioning correctly.
